Tips for New Patients: Talking with Invisalign

Invisalign is a popular choice for orthodontic treatment and it’s easy to see why! The clear aligners are nearly invisible when worn and they can be taken out for eating and brushing teeth.

However, many people wonder if it’s difficult to speak with Invisalign in place. It can definitely take some getting used to, but with a few tips you can feel confident speaking while wearing your aligners!

The clear aligners are new to your mouth. They are made of transparent plastic which can impact your speech. You may experience a minor lisp, with sounds such as “sh” or pronouncing the letter “s”. This is normal! With practice the lisp will either go away or become very minimal.

Here are a few tips from Dr. Eimar when it comes to talking with Invisalign:

Practice at home before you’re out and about in public, you can take the time to practice in the comfort of your own home.

Read out loud or practice speaking in front of a mirror. This will help you get used to the feeling of having aligners in your mouth.

Go slow when you first start wearing Invisalign. Speak slowly and enunciate your words carefully. As you get more comfortable, you can start speaking at your normal pace.

Stand up straight! Good posture will help you project your voice and be heard more clearly.
